The framework agreement to establish a cross-border economic zone has been approved between Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region (China) and Quảng Ninh province (Việt Nam). The zone will cover 5 square kilometers in Móng Cái city and 5 square kilometers in Dongxing city.
 
Dongxing, the only Chinese city with both land and sea borders with ASEAN, has a total area of 540.7 square kilometers and a population of 110,000. Móng Cái, a key Vietnamese city open to the outside world with preferential government policies, has a total area of about 520 square kilometers and a population of about 100,000. Therefore, the border economic cooperation zone will play an important role in facilitating trade and tourism between the two cities, two provinces, boosting China-Vietnam economic ties and enhancing China-ASEAN cooperation.
 
According to the initial plan, Móng Cái border economic co-operation zone will cover about 520 hectares in Móng Cái city and consist of four main functional areas namely free trade area, processing and industrial area, international transshipment area, goods circulation area and others.
 
During the meeting, leaders of departments and Móng Cái city voiced comments and contributed ideas to the plan.
 
At the end of this meeting, the vice-chairman of Quảng Ninh provincial People’s Committee Nguyễn Văn Thành asked the consultancy company to pay much attention to all of the delegates’ ideas and work closely with the Department of Investment and Planning to complete the plan within October, 2010./.
